Sri Lanka: Authorities announce traffic and security measures in multiple areas, including Colombo and Mattala, for Iranian presidential visit April 24

Authorities plan traffic and security curbs in Colombo and other areas of Sri Lanka April 24 for Iranian presidential visit.

Warning

Sri Lankan officials are imposing traffic and security measures in and between Colombo and Mattala due to an official visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi April 24. The tightest security is certain in and along routes leading to the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI), where President Raisi will arrive in the morning, and official event venues, including the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) site in Badulla District and the Hilton Colombo hotel.

Routes connecting Mattala to Uma Oya area will close 09:45-11:00 and 12:00-13:00. Road closures will also be active in Colombo 14:00-15:00 in or along Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Dematagoda to D.S. Senanayake Mawatha in Borella, Galle Face, Galle Road, Green Path, Horton Place, Liberty Junction, Lotus Road, Orugodawatta, and St. Anthony’s Road. Sections of the E03 highway between Colombo and Katunayake will close 14:00-15:00 and 20:30-22:30. Traffic curbs will also impact the section of Galle Road between Lotus Road and Bank of Ceylon Mawatha in the evening.

Although authorities have not publicized any specific threat to the event, officials are imposing precautionary security measures. Vehicular and pedestrian checks are likely at key sites such as major roadways, government buildings, security installations, and crowded public places, likely prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid associated venues as a precaution if not attending related events. Limit exposure to prominent government buildings. Allow additional time for transport, especially along affected routes. Present proper identification documents and remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks. Confirm all business appointments and transport reservations. Heed all transport and security advisories.
