Case Study
Medical Assistance and Cross-Border Repatriation for a Neurological Emergency
12 Sep 2025

Situational Analysis
The regional manager of an international organization contacted Crisis24’s 24/7 Global Operations Center to report that an employee, a Swiss national in his 50s working in Berlin, Germany, was experiencing a neurological emergency. The patient had been admitted to a local hospital and diagnosed with a cerebral infarction, or ischemic stroke, which occurs when a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. Crisis24 was engaged to provide immediate assistance and support to the patient and coordination for eventual repatriation to Switzerland.
Initial Communication and Coordination
The Crisis24 medical team promptly connected with the treating physicians and worked closely with the patient’s employer, the hospital, and the supplemental insurance carrier. The patient presented with paralysis and loss of speech, common initial symptoms of a stroke. At the request of the patient’s employer, discreet outreach to close family members was initiated on behalf of the patient.
Patient-Centered Focus
Crisis24 coordinated an extended hospital stay in Berlin to ensure clinical stabilization and crucial early rehabilitation, before initiating repatriation to Switzerland. Because the patient was unable to speak, the medical team organized a written consent process in collaboration with hospital staff. The patient promptly signed the documentation, enabling the process to move forward without delay and ensuring that all decisions respected the patient’s autonomy.
Coordinated Medical Transport Across Borders
Once the patient was deemed stable for travel, Crisis24 arranged the patient’s transfer to a specialized rehabilitation facility near his residence in Switzerland for ongoing treatment and rehabilitation. The patient was transferred by ground ambulance to Berlin airport, accompanied by a specialist nurse escort, and on arrival at the airport, he was transferred through the airport in a wheelchair (WCHS). He was taken to the business class lounge before he promptly boarded a business class flight to Zurich. Upon arrival, he was met by another ambulance and taken directly to the receiving hospital. The nurse escort provided a full medical briefing to the receiving team and made sure that all medical notes and imaging were safely handed over.
The Crisis24 medical team maintained clear, continuous coordination between the attending and receiving hospitals, ensuring a smooth handover and consistent care. By managing logistical and clinical details, Crisis24 reduced the burden on the patient and provided reassurance during a vulnerable time.
Outcome: A Stable Transition into Rehabilitation
Crisis24 acted as a stabilizing presence, ensuring all critical needs were met for the patient at a time when he had minimal personal support. Proactive coordination enabled a medically appropriate and timely transfer, minimizing stress for the patient and maximizing efficiency.
The entire operation – from hospital liaison to escorted air travel and final handover – was completed without complication. Consistent, patient-first planning and clear communication between all parties enabled a smooth transition into rehabilitation care in Switzerland.
