Mass Notification Supports Employee Safety and Business Continuity During Multiple Natural Disasters
4 Mar 2025

During a natural disaster, such as a wildfire, fast and accurate communication is critical for ensuring the safety of employees and maintaining business continuity. When the fires broke out around Los Angeles (LA), California, on January 7, 2025, a large manufacturing company used their Mass Notification platform from Crisis24 to identify and quickly communicate with impacted employees. The company’s communications team was able to stay in touch with employees to ensure their safety and provide support, and keep leaders informed of the situation for the duration of the fire threat--while also managing multiple crises globally.
Ensuring Employee Safety with Fast, Targeted Communication
During the early morning hours on the first day of the LA fires, the company mobilized quickly to determine the impact of the fires on their people and operations. While the fires did not pose a threat to their facilities, the company was concerned about employees who lived in the area. Using geofencing capabilities within their Mass Notification platform, the communications team was able to identify employees potentially impacted by the fires. They immediately sent a message via multiple channels, including email, text, and voice, with response options to those employees in the area to find out if they were safe or needed support.
The situation and the message responses were monitored throughout the day to make sure there were no changes to employees’ safety status. Mass Notification was also used to send alerts about shift changes, power outages, and site closures. It helped the company keep leaders informed and mobilize teams from different facilities to keep operations running.
Given the rapidly spreading fires and air quality concerns later in the day, the communications team expanded their reach by sending messages to anyone who hadn’t responded to the first communication, and they also included employees located in surrounding counties to check on everyone’s safety. More employees began confirming their status via email and SMS, and many employees were grateful for the company’s fast communication and outreach efforts.
In times like these, the communications team emphasized the importance of being agile and having a plan in place, but also being flexible. And most importantly, thinking from the perspective of the audience you’re communicating with. After confirming the safety of employees, the company also used Mass Notification to send information about company resources, such as lodging, how to access medications, and other support to those employees impacted by the fires.
One Mass Notification Platform to Coordinate Global Crisis Response
The LA fires were not the only crisis the organization faced. At the same time, unprecedented snow and freezing temperatures were impacting Southern and Eastern parts of the United States, while extreme weather overseas was causing further disruption. The company used their Mass Notification platform to send messages and mobilize teams for all of these crises simultaneously.
The software’s scalability and repeatability allowed the company to ensure consistent and effective responses to each crisis, regardless of location. Thanks to pre-built processes and cascading messages, the Mass Notification platform allowed the company to respond quickly with minimal human interaction while keeping leadership notified and maintaining business continuity.
Mass Notification plays a critical role in helping this company fulfill their duty of care responsibility for employees no matter where they are and maintain continuity of business operations.
